Friday FNM 05/03/2012

Okay, well here's how it went at Capital City Games in Springfield, IL.

I showed up at around 6:30 or so on Friday night, bought my draft set and 2 DGM boosters, as well as a GTC booster and some new sleeves since my old ones were dwindling from overuse.

I learned of a new style of doing drafts, something called a Thieves Draft, in which players draft and keep their drafts like normal, then when the rounds are over, from each pod players put all Rares, Mythics and Foils back into the pod and draft them in the order they finished in.

So I drafted mostly Dimir, and splashed Orzhov on the side. My first pack I opened had Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker in it. So yeah, that's why I went with that. I had a High Priest of Penance, Woodlot Crawler, Dimir Charm, and a bunch of other fun stuff going on.

Match 1 - Draw (1-1)
Game one was against a particularly young chubby fellow who felt the need to rather boisterously announce every card he slapped annoyingly down on the table, and read the description of it. Oh yeah, and he reeked of weed. He was running a Selesnya something or other thrown together to try to work. Game one, with about 10 creatures each on the table, he finally managed to ping me for the final 3 damage he needed. He literally did damage to me with one creature the whole game. Twas annoying.

Game two went much better, about turn 6 it just ended, very swiftly with Mirko Vosk making a swift appearance and his cards in his library making a swift disappearance. It felt good. Time was called before we could start game 3.

Match 2 - Loss (0-2) vs Real Selesnya
This guy knew his stuff, and knew how to draft. He went on to go undefeated on the night. I am guessing that he drew Trostani's Revenge in his opening pack, cuz he used it insanely effectively. He must've built around it. Needless to say it was tokens galore. The first game I was handily beat. The second game he had a bit more trouble due to some flying, a Soulsworn Spirit and Woodlot Crawler. He still took it tho.

Match 3 - Win (2-1) vs Black/Red/Green
Not really sure what this was all about, but I used a 5/5 that returns to my hand every time it does combat damage, was super fun and milled her out with Mirko Vosk while using Mortus Strider to effectively block all combat damage she would have dealt to me on her turns. Both games I won, it was a mill out. Pretty fun.

The girl I played the third match against I also played her vampire deck with my werewolf deck, and effectively destroyed her in 6 turns. It was ugly, and that was with removal as well on her end. I don't think she knew what her intent was with the decks she was playing, they seemed to have no direction whatsoever.

So my pulls for the night out of the thieves draft, (I got 3rd pick somehow) were a Vorel of the Hull Clade, a Progenitor Mimic, some rare red card that I didn't care about and a foil Mending Touch. So not too bad. Got some decent cards and had a good time.

I feel it bears mentioning that I had a couple excellent trades, a Bronzebeak Moa for the promo Judge's Familiar they were handing out that night. Not sure why we didn't get the Promo Toil/Trouble that was supposed to be being handed out for Launch Night, but hey, whatever. And I also traded a Gideon, Champion of Justice for an Isolated Chapel. Like a $6 trade up for me. I am okay with it.

There won't be any FNM this week for me, as I am working nights still, and won't have friday off. But I think the next night I may go is on Game Day the 24th. I am out for those promos for sure. And got a lot of stuff to do next weekend on my weekend off. So we shall see.
