FNM 6-28-13

So I went to Mayhem Collectibles, Ames with my Prime Speaker Bant variant deck expecting nothing more than an experience. And I was in for it.
Let me start off by saying I am immensely irritated by my deck's performance on card draw. It just went to crap real fast. I run 4 Arbor Elf, 4 Gyre Sage and 4 Predator Ooze in my deck, and only one out of every 4 games did I even see one of them in my opening hand, which is extremely disappointing with those card odds. My ramp didn't want to work right, my land base was horrible and overall every match I played it just did not want to work.
So barring that I learned a lot about my deck.

Match 1 vs a B/R/G speed deck playing things like Rakdos Cackler, Hellrider and that sort. First game he came out swinging and rolled me in 5-7 turns. Game 2 I beat him in 5 turns by dropping an Increasing Savagery on Gyre Sage and turning around and dropping the same Increasing Savagery onto Predator Ooze from the graveyard and next turn dropping an Ajani, Caller of the Pride for flying doublestrike to the face. Third game he was a little more prepared for the Ooze and planned around it. But it was close. Exava was his only saving grace.

Match two was basically a kid playing a variant of the first match's deck, except he beat me 2-0. And I had him down to 4 life and made a dumb move swinging with a 8/8 Arbor Elf with a Rancor on it, and he came back and dropped a Legion Loyalist for a battalion effect. Lame.

Match 3 I came up against my buddy Alvin, and he has a unique homebrew built that runs Golgari colors, but runs a LOT of removal, our first game went 35 minutes, and he had so many answers it was annoying. I had nothing to counter his instant removal, and the second game I had a bad draw and kept it, and it ended much quicker.

Match 4 I steamrolled with my Predator Oozes and Ajani's and totally destroyed a pauper deck that had no answers for me. It would figure that my last game of the night my deck would finally draw what I needed.

Oh well, at least I now know some things that I need to change about my deck. Will be doing a tad bit of tooling and will post a new deck some time this week. I won't be using this deck again until after M14 releases due to the 4th being this weekend. (However, my brother will be in town this weekend so I am sure we will be working on it.) Next weekend is Pre-Release for M14, and the next day I leave for 2 weeks of AT, so yeah, my next FNM I might get to play at will be on Aug 2nd.

So will post any updates between now and then on changes I make, I bought a box of M14, but won't be able to pick it up until after I get back on the 28th of July. So will post any good pulls I get then as well.

Prime Speaker Bant-ish

Here is my decklist for my take on Prime Speaker Bant

      Creature (28)

       Sideboard (15)

Recent Happenings

So I have come up with and narrowed down a new deck idea recently. Just to state something from the get go, I absolutely abhor people who just copy and paste a winning SCO deck and then just run the mess out of it. Just doesn't feel right to me. I mean, yes, everything under the sun has been done and I'm sure anything you run is going to be a slight modification of something someone else is running somewhere . . . but at least TRY to make it your own in some way shape or form. Anywho, I digress . . .
So I started off with a homebrew I cooked up with Master Biomancer and Progenitor Mimic, leaning heavily on things like Thragtusk and Deadeye Navigator and lots of ramp to get things flowing on the field nicely. Well, it didn't work as fast as I wanted and even adding things like Loxodon Smiter wasn't getting me enough defense and I was getting shredded by aggro and boardwipe decks. So I went back to the basics, since where I was getting beat was ramping out of cards, and topdecking into nothing but lands or just things that did me no good.
So I revamped it yet again, adding in things like Predator Ooze and even tried a black splash version using Corpsejack Menace and Lotleth Troll, but never even took it to FNM it did so poorly during playtesting. So I was almost ready to give up on the whole G/U/W idea completely and just go back to my Mono-Black roots and try to do some type of Immortal Servitude deck, when I came across Prime Speaker Bant.
I was intrigued by the setup and didn't like a few things about it, namedly that it used Restoration Angel to blink things, and I just don't like the consistency of that card when it comes to the blink effect. I am sold on Deadeye Navigator for it's use there. One more CMC and I can blink anything as much as I want as long as I have the 2 mana to do so, much much more consistent. And it gets nasty when you blink Thragtusk 5 times in a matter of seconds. I have had games where I get down to 4 life by turn 4 or 5 against aggro, and turn around and have 34 by the end of turn 5 with 5 3/3 Beast Tokens on the field to boot. Don't draw another Prime Speaker Zegana and are in a stall? Just blink Deadeye Navigator and Soulbond with the Prime Speaker and then blink it to draw cards. So useful. I digress again.
I also removed Loxodon Smiter from the Prime Speaker Bant for Predator Ooze because I love the Indestructable ability for use against Bant Auras decks, because those can get super annoying. You pump Predator Ooze to the teeth and he can be a very formidable threat.
I like the Angel of Serenity because it gives me good options. I can either exile my own creatures and Cloudshift my AOS to return them all and then exile opponents if I need the boost or life gain. I also run Acidic Slime, and he is just downright nasty if you drop him turn 3 and in the following turns blink him to destroy land base, leaving your opponent hosed. That is especially nasty if they are running aggro.
But enough with the bore, I will post a decklist a bit later so you can look and comment as to what you think or don't think about how it's put together. Most people would say it looks nothing like Prime Speaker Bant the original, but I am perfectly okay with that. As I was just using it as a basic template that seemed to fit cards I already wanted to use and was using without completely ditching an idea.
So until later this evening, I bid you farewell.

Looking forward to Game Day

Due to being super busy on other projects, as well as doing a  very intense amount of across the country trading via mail, I have not being doing much playing other than on Cockatrice playtesting my newest mutilation against various other decks to try and get a feel for what works, and what does not. I hold my own against Speed Aggro Rakdos, I know that much. My game is a slow starter, but I have a fair bit of removal to deal with pesky starter ups. I promise, I will get a deck list on here as soon as I can, most likely it will be Friday, as I won't be attending FNM due to the fact that I currently do not have all the cards for my new deck, and I currently do not have any other decks put together. I pretty much have exhausted my trade pool and collection to try and build this new deck. And when most of the cards are between $5.50-$12 each, with a couple being as high as $18, things start to get pricey real fast. Just off the top of my head I have $21 wrapped up in Master Biomancer, $48 wrapped up in Temple Garden, $18 in Breeding Pool, with another $18 still to go, $14 in Hinterland Harbor, with $14 more to go, $16 in Loxodon Smiter, $10 in Progenitor Mimic, $22 in Thragtusk, $22 in Sunpetal Grove, $12 in Primordial Hydra, and a few other odds and ends that aren't really that costly, but still take time to aquire. That's already $185 worth of trading, just in the last 15 days or so. And I'm not quite done yet. But seeing as how I started out with only a Master Biomancer, a Progenitor Mimic, a Vorel of the Hull Clade and a couple of Primordial Hydra, it's not bad how far I have come.

So needless to say, I am plugging forward with trading currently, and starting days in work next week. So things are looking up! Look forward to that deck list and any suggestions from the readers will be greatly appreciated. As always, if you read, I appreciate it, and talk to you later!

Friday FNM 05/03/2012

Okay, well here's how it went at Capital City Games in Springfield, IL.

I showed up at around 6:30 or so on Friday night, bought my draft set and 2 DGM boosters, as well as a GTC booster and some new sleeves since my old ones were dwindling from overuse.

I learned of a new style of doing drafts, something called a Thieves Draft, in which players draft and keep their drafts like normal, then when the rounds are over, from each pod players put all Rares, Mythics and Foils back into the pod and draft them in the order they finished in.

So I drafted mostly Dimir, and splashed Orzhov on the side. My first pack I opened had Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker in it. So yeah, that's why I went with that. I had a High Priest of Penance, Woodlot Crawler, Dimir Charm, and a bunch of other fun stuff going on.

Match 1 - Draw (1-1)
Game one was against a particularly young chubby fellow who felt the need to rather boisterously announce every card he slapped annoyingly down on the table, and read the description of it. Oh yeah, and he reeked of weed. He was running a Selesnya something or other thrown together to try to work. Game one, with about 10 creatures each on the table, he finally managed to ping me for the final 3 damage he needed. He literally did damage to me with one creature the whole game. Twas annoying.

Game two went much better, about turn 6 it just ended, very swiftly with Mirko Vosk making a swift appearance and his cards in his library making a swift disappearance. It felt good. Time was called before we could start game 3.

Match 2 - Loss (0-2) vs Real Selesnya
This guy knew his stuff, and knew how to draft. He went on to go undefeated on the night. I am guessing that he drew Trostani's Revenge in his opening pack, cuz he used it insanely effectively. He must've built around it. Needless to say it was tokens galore. The first game I was handily beat. The second game he had a bit more trouble due to some flying, a Soulsworn Spirit and Woodlot Crawler. He still took it tho.

Match 3 - Win (2-1) vs Black/Red/Green
Not really sure what this was all about, but I used a 5/5 that returns to my hand every time it does combat damage, was super fun and milled her out with Mirko Vosk while using Mortus Strider to effectively block all combat damage she would have dealt to me on her turns. Both games I won, it was a mill out. Pretty fun.

The girl I played the third match against I also played her vampire deck with my werewolf deck, and effectively destroyed her in 6 turns. It was ugly, and that was with removal as well on her end. I don't think she knew what her intent was with the decks she was playing, they seemed to have no direction whatsoever.

So my pulls for the night out of the thieves draft, (I got 3rd pick somehow) were a Vorel of the Hull Clade, a Progenitor Mimic, some rare red card that I didn't care about and a foil Mending Touch. So not too bad. Got some decent cards and had a good time.

I feel it bears mentioning that I had a couple excellent trades, a Bronzebeak Moa for the promo Judge's Familiar they were handing out that night. Not sure why we didn't get the Promo Toil/Trouble that was supposed to be being handed out for Launch Night, but hey, whatever. And I also traded a Gideon, Champion of Justice for an Isolated Chapel. Like a $6 trade up for me. I am okay with it.

There won't be any FNM this week for me, as I am working nights still, and won't have friday off. But I think the next night I may go is on Game Day the 24th. I am out for those promos for sure. And got a lot of stuff to do next weekend on my weekend off. So we shall see.

Pre-Release Shinanigans

Okay, I just want to say first of all. I had the coolest thing happen that could possibly happen at a pre-release, (besides getting 1'st place that is) I used a god hand. Yes, that's right. A 6 turn annihilation of perfect cards that gave me a 5 minute win with my life total at 20 and his at 0. Gotcha!

So for my decklist

Creatures: (15)
1x Blistercoil Weird              = R/U
1x Skinbrand Goblin            = 1R
1x Zhur-Taa Druid               = RG
1x Disciple of the Old Ways = 1G
1x Slaughterhorn                  = 2G
1x Battering Krasis              = 2G
2x Wind Drake                    = 2U
1x Beetleform Mage             = 1GU
1x Scorchwalker                  = 3R
1x Runewing                         = 3U
1x Zhur-Taa Swine               = 3RG
1x Species Gorger                = 3GU
1x Scab-Clan Giant              = 4RG
1x Malek, Izzet Paragon

Instants: (7)
1x Mending Touch               = G
1x Weapon Surge                = R
1x Gruul Charm                   = RG
1x Predator's Rapport         = 2G
1x Annihilating Fire              = 1RR
1x Counterflux                    = UUR
1x Essence Backlash          = 2UR

Sorcery: (3)
1x Phytoburst                      = 1G
1x Hidden Strings                = 1U
1x Clan Defiance                 = X,RG

Artifact (1)
1x Izzet Keyrune                  = 3

Land: (16)
1x Izzet Guildgate
1x Gruul Guildgate
4x Island
4x Mountain
5x Forest

Okay, so basic strategy here was this. I had a bunch of pump spells and counters, plus a couple decent chances at getting some free hits for damage with the Hidden Strings, which worked well, and also worked well for getting the mana you need when you first cast it early on. The reason for so many Instants and Sorceries was to try to pump my one drop each turn, or later on, to cast them with Malek, which only happened twice the entire night. A lot of the creatures I intended strictly for bloodrushing actually played some pretty vital roles as creatures on the field instead of being bloodrushed.

So anyways, the rundown on the matches. There were 6 rounds.

Round I - (0-2)
Played a guy who was running an Orzhov/Rakdos combo.
I mana screwed game one and couldn't get any islands out and just got mowed.
Game two went my way and had him down to 4 life, had 6 lands out and was holding Essence Backlash, Phytoburst and Malek in my hand. I thought to wait to play the Malek in case he tried bombing me with a large creature. I didn't. Aaaaand he dropped Obzedat, Ghost Council next turn and proceeded to give it to me right in the shorts.

Round II - (2-0)
Played a clustered mess of a Golgari/Simic deck. I he had me on the ropes for a bit, but I ended up walking away with two fairly easy wins.

Round III - (2-1)
I played a very tough matchup against a guy running Orzhov/Golgari, he beat me round 1 and I countered back with my best hand of the night.
Turn 1 dropped a Gruul Guildgate, turn 2 dropped a Forest and a Disciple of the Old Ways, he has 2 mana, no creatures. Turn 3, drop an Izzet Guildgate and a Phytoplasm hitting him for 7. He now has 3 lands. No creatures. Next turn, I drop a Battering Krasis and swing for 2. He now has 11 life and 4 lands, still no creatures. Turn 5 I drop an Island. Swing for 5, he is down to 6 life. He finally drops a creature, a 3/3 something, I counter it with Essence backlash, dealing 3 damage to him. He is down to 3. Turn 6, swing for 5, game over.
Game 3 was fun as well. He dropped a creature early on and I managed to get my Zhur-Taa Druid out, as did he. Then I dropped my Slaughterhorn onto the field and on turn 5 with his creatures tapped I Phytoplasm'd my Slaughterhorn, declared him as an attacker and swung a Disciple of the Old Ways, then bloodrushed Scorchwalker onto the Slaughterhorn, swinging 15 at him in one turn, he was now down to 2, next turn swung for 5, and 2 hit. That was game.

Round IV - (1-2)
Got my butt handed to me from a guy who had an extremely organized Simic and Selesnya deck. He had an answer for everything I tried.

Round V - (1-2)
Lost again to a Selesnya/Boros combo. Got completely mana flooded for 5 turns, and then every other card was a land card. Then just got thrashed with token craziness.

Round VI - (1-2)
Handily got beat game 1 by a guy I had played for fun earlier in the night. Game 2 went my way by a landslide, and game 3 went on for forever, it was down to him 5 life and me 1 and time ran on the round.

So 2-4 on the night. But got some great cards and had a ton of fun.

Pre-Release Countdown . . .

  Okay gents and ladies,
We are 2 hours away from doors opening, and 2.5 hours from the fun beginning. Do I get butterflies before these events? You bet I do. Especially with the secrecy of what my second guild might be.
Grrrrrrr, I am SO torn!! If I go Gruul, I have a 50% chance of scoring Golgari or Rakdos. Of course, I have the same chance of scoring Selesnya or Izzet, neither of which will pair well in my opinion.
But of course, if I choose Golgari, then I have chances at Gruul, Orzhov, Simic and Dimir. Of which Gruul and probably Orzhov would pair the best. Maybe Simic . . . either way. This is gut wrenching for me.
So will be updating this post or just posting new posts throughout the night and might even get up a decklist if I have time between rounds, depending on how bad I kick butt or get mine kicked.
See ya at the games . . .

Okay, so showed up at 11:35, the place was packed as usual, and there were about 54 contestants I believe. They began by introducing everything and explaining how the implicit maze worked and what the prizes were, blah blah. Those of us who had been researching this for the past 2 months now already knew all that, but okay.
Then they began calling off names and asking what guild you wanted to represent. About 20% played Gruul, which I decided on. (I wanted that button) I paired with Izzet, the only one I didn't prepare for. The guy across from me pulled Selesnya with Gruul as his main.
For my Rare in my Izzet guild pack I pulled Counterflux, which all in all isn't a bad card. Not really what I would have liked though. For my Rare in my Gruul guild pack I pulled Call of the Conclave, which is a pretty dynamite card. In my Dragon's Maze packs, the rares were Sire of Insanity, Melek, Izzet Paragon, Blood Baron of Vizkopa and Volroz, the Scar Striped. All in all, excellent rare pulls. Looking back now, I probably should have built a Gruul/Golgari deck, but I did have a lot in the form of Izzet, Simic and Gruul that I played with.
That is all for this post, I will get on to my decklist and other pulls in my next post. Along with how the night went. I went 2-4 on the night. Both of my wins were 2-0 wins, and all my losses except 1 were 1-2 matches. I only got skunked the first matchup of the night, and that was because of making a very stupid mistake.

Cheers!
